It's World Hearing Day!

World Hearing Day takes places on the 3rd of March each year to raise awareness of how to prevent deafness and hearing loss and promote ear and hearing care across the world.

This year’s theme is “Ear and Hearing Care for All!"

According to World Health Organisation (WHO), ear and hearing problems are among the most common problems encountered in the community, and this is only one of the reasons why it is essential that ear and hearing care is integrated into primary care and considered an essential component of universal health coverage. Hear Hear!

Of course, as a hearing industry that provides hearing products and hearing support for those that need then, we encourage World Hearing Day and the importance of increasing awareness of hearing care globally.

Did you know?

• Over 60% of ear and hearing problems can be identified and addressed at the primary level of care
• Integration of ear and hearing care into primary care services is possible through training and capacity building at this level
• Such integration will benefit people and help countries move towards the goal of universal health coverage

2023’s theme of “Ear and hearing care for all” will cover the below communication objectives:

• Draw attention of decision makers in governments and civil society groups towards the WHO’s recommendations regarding integration of ear and hearing care into PHC.
• Encourage governments to integrate primary ear and hearing care into training programmes for health care providers at primary level.
• Call attention of primary level health care providers (health workers and physicians) towards the needs of people with hearing loss and ear disease.
• Inform people about the importance of ear and hearing care and encourage them to seek services.

This year, WHO have released a training manual. This is a practical guide on the prevention, identification, and management of hearing loss and common ear diseases that lead to hearing loss. It is intended mainly for health workers and doctors who work at primary care level and provide services to people either at health facilities or in communities. Things to know:

• Over 1.5 billion people live with hearing loss of which nearly 430 million people live with disabling hearing loss.
• In children, 60% of hearing loss can be prevented through public health strategies.
• Unaddressed hearing loss is the leading cause of morbidity and poses an annual cost of $980 billion globally.

Tips for Healthy Ears

Do:

1. Use earplugs in noisy places
2. Check your hearing regularly
3. Wear your hearing aids regularly when advised
4. See a doctor if you have ear or hearing problems

Don’t:

1. Put cotton buds, oil, sticks or pins inside your ears
2. Swim or wash in dirty water
3. Share earphones or earbuds
4. Listen to loud sounds or loud music
